In case you haven't heard from the beautiful Facebook page (haha), the registration for SIGA 2011 in Singapore is already OPEN LAH.

Registration Rates & Cancellation Fees

Early Bird Rate

Those who register between now and Valentine's Day (14th February 2011), will enjoy a discounted rate of S$321 (includes Singapore Goods & Services Tax). Those who wish to have single rooms will need to pay S$642.

Normal Rates

From 1st-31st March, 2011, the rate will be back to the usual amount of S$481, and S$963 for single rooms.

Children

Children (4-12 years old) will need to pay the same rates as adults. Children under 4 years of age, sharing adults with no extra bed will not be charged. :)

Cancellation Fees

Before 28 Feb 2011 - No charges
Between 1 March 2011 and 13 Mar 2011 - 50% will be charged
Between 14 March 2011 up to 13 Apr 2011 - 75 % will be charged
After 14th April 2010 - No refund

As you know from a previous post, SIGA in 2010 will be held at Ayuthaya, Thailand from the 30th April 2010 to 3rd May, 2010. We are pleased to announce that registration for SIGA has been opened. :D

Registration Rates & Cancellation Fees

Early Bird Rate

Those who register between now and the 28th February, 2010, will enjoy a discounted rate of US$180. Single rooms require an additional US$60.

Normal Rates

From 1st-31st March, 2010, the rate will be back to the usual amount of US$225, with an additional US$60 for single rooms.

Children

Children (4-12 years old) rates are US$135.

Cancellation Fees

Before 31st March 2010 : 50% of the paid amount will be refunded
After 1st April 2010 : No refund

Ayutthaya is located approximately 85 km north of Bangkok, the city was the Thai capital from 1350 to 1767. During this period Thai culture flourished, and Ayuthaya became a centre for international commerce.

The present day city is located at the confluence of the Chao Phaya, Pa Sak and Lopburi rivers. A canal joins them and encircles the town. Ayuthaya has many historic ruins, two museums and is a fascinating place to visit.

Flight Information: How to Get To Bangkok?

Fortunately, Ayutthaya is located in a very familiar country to most of us in Brunei. Our national carrier, Royal Brunei Airlines, have daily flights to Bangkok. To book tickets, click here.

Bersatu Events: Majlis Korban at SSEAYP Cafe

Last Sunday, 29th November 2009, we had a little Majlis Korban to commemorate the Hari Raya Aidiladha. So buffaloes were slaughtered and a ceremony was held at the SSEAYP Cafe.

Receiving guests. :) We invited many valuable members of the community to share the buffaloes with. Those who share with the unfortunate reap many many benefits.

The President gave a short speech. Funny thing, in the speech he accidentally said Aidilfitri. Hehehe.

The guest of honour, the Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Pg Hj Bahrom Pg Hj Bahar giving a speech. He said Aidiladha. Haha.

Giving out the meat to our guests. :) A kilo each.

Then there was a photo session of the Guest of Honour with Bersatu Exco and Heads of Bureau.

Congratulations to Haji Aduka, Head of the Religious Bureau, who organised the whole event with the help of the AJK members of the event. It was very well run and everything was very efficient! :D Congrats!

Just some updates of Bersatu activities over the last few weeks.

18 Nov (Wednesday): Some members attended the public lecture in UBD entitled: "Empowering Youth Through MIB" organised by the Akademi Pengajian Brunei.

23rd Nov 2009 (Monday): Exco had a site-visit to the Homestay Matching venue which is the Multipurpose Hall at the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Stadium.

Later in the afternoon, they went for a courtesy call to the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affair, Pg Haji Bahrom Bin Pg Haji Bahar in his office.

Volunteer at Bersatu HQ!

As days of Fuji Maru's berthing at Muara Port looms near, more work needs to be done. Come and volunteer (in other words, working while chit chating and catching up too) at the Bersatu HQ and help out with making of Bunga Telur, cutting papers, arranging papers according to envelopes, other menial jobs. You can also help out by making drinks, cooking in the kitchen, or cleaning up to keep the assembly lines going!

There is enough for everyone and we are happy just having you around! :D Bring back the SSEAYP spirit and fun by volunteering at the HQ.

The HQ is located at the Anggerek Flats, and we are open from 6.30pm onwards. :D

Bersatu Choir Troupe to perform in Empire Theatre for AMAF Event

This was a rehearsal session for the BCT headed by Nazmo (BPY05), Head of the Cultural Bureau, Amier and Adeq (both BPY07) for the AMAF Gala Night in The Empire Theatre. :) Brought back many memories. Hope you all enjoy watching.They will be performing tomorrow night. Wish them luck!

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

1. When is the ROB Brunei?
This year's ROB will be held on the 10th December 2009 (Thursday) from 6.00-9.00pm.

2. ONLY 3 HOURS?
Yes only 3 hours. So come before 7pm because after that, the gate will be closed and the Japanese administration will allow no more guests to enter.

3. What is the theme for this year's ROB?
Arabian Nights. For more information about the meaning of this theme, click here or listen to this song. For dress or outfit ideas, watch the video below. :)

3. How do I register and participate?
Fill in the online registration form by <<CLICKING HERE>>. After the date of your online registration, you have 3 days to confirm your attendance by paying the amount stated in full.

4. How do I pay for my tickets?
The HQ will be open from 5-8pm daily for cash payment and registration of ROB Brunei guests. For international guests (PYs from other countries), however, please pay for your ticket via money order to:

ROB SECRETARIAT
No. 10 Block C3, Anggerek Desa Flat, Berakas Brunei Darussalam.

5. When is the HQ open and to whom do I pay?
The HQ will be open from 5-8pm daily starting 26th October, 2009, for cash payment and registration of ROB Brunei guests. Please look for Baim or his lovely assistant, Dk Maswati who are both in charge of the $$$. :)

6. What if I filled in the form and decide to cancel my attendance to the ROB?

It's ok. Your attendance will only be confirmed once you have paid the amount in full.

7. What happens if I did not pay within the 3 day time period?
If you do not complete payment then your registration will be cancelled and your seat will be available for registration for other PYs.

8. If I need help or have issues and questions regarding the online registration form, who do I talk to?

A few weeks ago, Hj Jailani, our YDP uploaded this photo of an open house in the BERSATU HQ on Facebook. A lot of people were very excited, and many called out for another open house. So here it is now.

BERSATU Hari Raya Special on RTB: Were you listening?

There was a live interview of SI Brunei (BERSATU) on RTB Television Brunei today on 23 Sept. 2009. The programme featured Hj. Jailani (President) and Haji Hassan Shaari (Secretary General) with host David Wood and Sarinah at RTB Studio, Bandar Seri Begawan.

Amina Rasul (Phils), Imhar Said (Spore) and Rino Wicaksono (Indonesia) also joined on air via telephone live during this program.

It was aired at the ungodly hour of 8.30 am in the morning. DID YOU WATCH IT??? Unfortunately I "watched" it with my eyes closed!

Sungkai at Pudak

The BERSATU members today went on a planned tour to Kampung Pudak in Pulau Berambang today. It was really my first time and boy, was I sakai to the max! We all parked in Serdang, and then took a motorboat to Pudak.

Ride took only about 5-10 minutes. When we arrived, I realised that Pudak is THE PERFECT spot to watch the sun set. Witnessed a beautiful sky turning golden as iftar time comes hither.

Everything in Pudak was washed in gold and warmth. Including the house of the ketua kampung who had kindly hosted us for sungkai.

After sungkai, the house is still so full of activity and energy.

Some went to the masjid just a minute walk away for prayers.

But all is fine because, we all know after all is done, it is time for some awesome teh tarek, Pudak style. :)

Kempen Kebersihan Masjid Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien

On September 13th, BERSATU organised a cleaning campaign at Masjid Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien in Kampong Katimahar as part of our community service. This is carried out with the kind cooperation from Jawatankuasa Takhmir Masjid and Brunei Muara Scouts Association.

Started off with mass Asar prayers. :)

Then the cleaning began! Funny times:

Some folded the telkongs~

Some became landscapers hehehe~

Some swept the floor~

Some cut grass~

Some cleaned windows~

Some cleaned longkangs~

Some vaccuumed~

Some burnt rubbish outside

Some arranged the Yassins~

Some helped with machinery~

But I very lazy, just took photos. :P Hahaha!

After the cleaning campaign, everyone sat down for a ceramah by Ustaz Hj Sadini Hj Sujak from Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.

Masjid PSBSOAS Anjuran BERSATU KAMPUNG KATIMAHAR, Ahad, 13 September. - Setiap amal kebajikan yang dilakukan dengan penuh keikhlasan lebih-lebih lagi di bulan Ramadan Al-Mubarak akan mendapat ganjaran pahala yang berlipat ganda dari Allah Subhanahu Wata'ala.
PENSYARAH ITQSHHB, Awang Haji Sadini bin Haji Sujak semasa menyampaikan ceramah di Masjid PSBSOAS Kampung Katimahar.

Demikian dijelaskan oleh Pensyarah Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Awang Haji Sadini bin Haji Sujak dalam ceramahnya di Masjid Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Omar 'Ali Saifuddien Kampung Katimahar hari ini.

Sesi ceramah itu adalah sempena kempen membersihkan masjid berkenaan yang diungkayahkan oleh Persatuan Bekas Peserta Rancangan Kapal Belia Asia Tenggara (BERSATU) bagi menyemarakkan bulan yang mulia ini.

Kempen yang diketuai oleh Yang Dipertua Persatuan BERSATU, Awang Haji Jailani bin Haji Ibrahim dengan kerjasama Ahli-ahli Jawatankuasa Tadbir Tertinggi Persatuan BERSATU itu bermula sejurus selepas menunaikan Sembahyang fardu Asar Berjemaah.

Kerja gotong-royong membersihkan ruang masjid termasuk bilik perpustakaan, stor, landskap serta kawasan halaman turut melibatkan penyertaan ahli-ahli Persatuan Pengakap Daerah Brunei dan Muara.

Acara diselajurkan dengan Majlis berbuka puasa dan diikuti sembahyang Maghrib dan Isyak Berjemaah serta Sembahyang Sunat Tarawih.

Antara objektif projek kemasyarakatan itu adalah untuk menyemai sikap pemedulian kalangan ahli-ahli persatuan berkenaan dan bekas-bekas peserta Rancangan Kapal Belia Asia Tenggara (SSEAYP) dengan Jawatankuasa Takmir masjid berkenaan serta penduduk kampung.
Apa yang diharapkan dengan adanya aktiviti bermanfaat seumpama ini akan dapat mengeratkan lagi hubungan silaturahim kalangan ahli-ahli Persatuan BERSATU dan juga bekas-bekas peserta SSEAYP.

Persatuan BERSATU ditubuhkan pada tahun 1987 dan kini mempunyai kira-kira 200 orang ahli yang terdiri daripada bekas-bekas peserta Rancangan Kapal Belia Asia Tenggara (SSEAYP).

I found this lovely comment made by Miss Norhayati Yunus (hehe) on Facebook about 2 hours ago when they just got home from the HQ. :) It really was a lovely day today. I was doing live updates on Twitter and hopefully someone finds it useful hee.

But honestly syukur alhamdullillah it all went very very very well, and we had amazing turnout from BPYs of various various years! Even the Guest of Honour, none other than Haji Rozan Hj Yunos, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications is a BPY 1990 (YL to be exact)! :D We were very happy to have him with us then. We hope to see you in many more of our events (or maybe just to hang out at the HQ).

The HQ welcome all BPYs, no matter how old or how young. :)

A big thank you and a big giant hug to the PYs who participated in the Khatam Al-Quran. Many congratulations especially to the PYs who recently converted to Islam.

And of course may the BPY2009 enjoy a safe journey around ASEAN. :) We wish you well on this journey of a lifetime.

But in our happy times, let us not forget the BPYs who are not with us anymore. Semoga rohnya dicucuri rahmat. Amin. Al-Fatihah.

Beliau menjelaskan bahawa kempen yang akan diadakan pada hari Ahad, 13 September ini akan bermula sejurus selesai menunaikan Sembahyang Fardu Asar Berjemaah di masjid berkenaan dan akan diselajurkan dengan Majlis Berbuka Puasa serta Sembahyang Fardu Maghrib dan Isyak Berjemaah.

"Sehubungan dengan itu sukacita dialu-alukan kehadiran ahli-ahli persatuan dan bekas-bekas peserta untuk sama-sama menyertai kempen tersebut," ujar beliau.

Rancangan Kapal Belia Asia Tenggara merupakan program tajaan negara Jepun yang turut disertai oleh negara-negara anggota ASEAN sejak tahun 1974.

Negara Brunei Darussalam mula menyertai program pertukaran belia itu pada tahun 1984 selaku pemerhati, manakala penyertaan penuh ialah pada tahun 1985.

As you know, this is a very happening week for Bersatu.

Cleaned up and ready to go!

On Friday we have the Majlis Khatam Al-Quran sempena bulan Ramadhan 1430H/2009M diselajurkan berdikir meraikan saudara2 baru SSEAYP yang memeluk agama Islam, meraikan BPY2009, berbuka puasa, sembahyang Maghrib dan sembahyang Isyak berjemaah diselajurkan sembahyang Tarawih. (Boy that's a long name!)

And on Sunday we have the community work in Masjid Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien, Kg. Katimahar in cooperation with Jawatankuasa Takhmir Masjid dan Persatuan Pengakap Daerah Brunei Muara.

So in preparation and anticipation of the two events, now the HQ in Anggerek is all hustling and bustling with activity! Had people coming in to do many things such as:

BERSATU interview live on Rampai Pagi (RTB)

I was sleeping this morning but I know some of our BERSATU members tuned in this morning to Rampai Pagi at about 9.40am to watch dynamic duo Haji Jailani and Haji Hassan clad in orange and black giving an interview to the two hosts.

I heard they look rather dashing! :D Next time we really should aim to appear during peak hours haha. Here are some photos from the interview taken by our super secret mole within RTB. ;)

Elections

As announced previously, the elections for the new Executive Committee for 2009-2011 will take place during the 14th Biannual General Meeting.

Briefly, the procedure for voting on the day will be as follows:

- Only registered members are able to run for the 8 Executive Posts available. If you have not registered yet as a member, you may register on the day in order to be nominated (Lifetime membership is $100 + $10 registration fee = $110)
- All BPYs are allowed to vote (whether registered or non-registered).
- All attendees are to report to the registration desk on arrival where they will receive their voting form
- Registered members will be asked whether they wish to be nominated. If they agree, their names will be recorded and they will be introduced during the meeting.
- Registered members HAVE to be present at the meeting in order to be nominated. If however, you are unable to attend and have a valid reason and you would still like to be nominated, you should inform the Executive Committee in writing. The Committee will then decide whether to accept the reason for the absence and to submit his/her nomination in his/her absence during the elections.
- Once the list of nominees have been finalised, all BPYs will record on their voting form a maximum of ten people from the list they would like to vote for.
- The votes will be counted at the end of the meeting and the top 8 nominees with the most number of votes will be announced as the new Executive Committee.
- The Executive Committee will then meet separately at another time to decide amongst themselves who will hold which of the 8 posts (e.g. President, Vice President, Secretary,etc)

BPY selected for Discussion Facilitator for SSEAYP 2009!

Congratulations to Patricia Yapp Siew Oi (BPY96) for being selected by the Cabinet Office of Japan to become this year's Discussion Facilitator for the new discussion topic, Food Culture/ Food and Nutrition Education!

Pat is a registered nurse and works with the Ministry of Health in Brunei. She is only the second BPY to be selected as Discussion Facilitator after the position was introduced in the SSEAYP in 2005. Well done Pat!

Appreciation and Thanksgiving Ceremony for Foster Families and Brunei Youth Participants SSEAYP 2008

After a lot of postponement due to unforeseen circumstances, Bersatu Association finally held an appreciation and thanksgiving ceremony for foster families and Brunei youth participants SSEAYP 2008 on Sunday 21 June 2009. It was held at the Digadong Hall in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. Guest of Honor for the event was Awang Haji Mohamad Penglima Asgar Dato Paduka Haji Abdullah, Director of the Department of Youth and Sports.

The president of Bersatu, Haji Jailani Haji Ibrahim gave a welcoming speech followed by Haji Karim bin Haji Ahmad, a representative from the foster families. Youth leader of the Brunei Contingent for SSEAYP 2008, Haji Khairul Ariffin bin Haji Abd Aji also gave a speech sharing their experiences during the program. He mentioned that the experiences will be unforgettable and will be experienced only during the program. He also emphasized that one of the objectives in participating was to encourage mutual understanding of culture and way of life amongst the participants.

The ceremony also witnessed the handing over of certificates of appreciation to foster families who were present. A prize-giving ceremony was also held for the most creative booth during the Homestay Matching Ceremony SSEAYP last year. It then ended with a doa recital followed by high-tea.

Thanks to everyone for helping out in the organizing of the event. And of course the host families, whose generosity in welcoming PYs to their homes continues to be appreciated. Thank you.

21st SIGA Jogja Indonesia (1 May 2009-4 May 2009) report

Apologies for the belated update...

At the beginning of all the H1N1 madness, 29 participants from Brunei (16 ex-BPYs and 13 host family members) led by the Deputy President 1, flew to Yogyakarta, Indonesia and joined 300 other participants from all over ASEAN and Japan from the 1-4 May 2009. This was the biggest SIGA in terms of participants ever held and congratulations to SI Indonesia for hosting what was indeed different to many other previous SIGAs.

The participants mostly stayed at the Jogja Plaza Hotel. However, almost all the events were not held at the hotel itself. Instead of a ballroom, the Opening Ceremony was held in the open air at the Bantul cultural village with many activities held there afterwards. The participants even had the opportunity to watch an amazing cultural show with the Borobodur as the backdrop (which is only performed 4 times a year) in the evening.

A good time was had by all! Well done SI Indonesia!

At the end of the proceedings, the hosting of the next SIGA was handed over to the ASSEAY Thailand. ASSEAY Thailand announced that the 22nd SIGA 2010 would be held in Ayutthaya, Thailand! Ayutthaya is a World Heritage City over an hour by car from Bangkok. Next year's SIGA is tentatively to be held from 30 April - 3 May 2010, so mark your diaries now!

Not the Nippon Maru...

As with previous years, this year the Cabinet Office of Japan is looking for Facilitators to join in the Discussion Program for this year's SSEAYP.Please read the following regarding application.

Anyone interested should send their application from their Alumni Associations and the Alumni Association will forward their application to the Cabinet Office of Japan.

For any Bruneians out there interested, please submit your application to Bersatu by 15th May 2009. For the application form, please email fakhri@doctors.org.uk

Please refer to the following guidelines:

1. Outline of the Discussion Program and the Post-Program Session
The Discussion Program intends to encourage the Participating Youths (PYs) (1) to deepen their understanding of the current situation of the various fields in each country; as well as (2-a) to promote mutual understanding; (2-b) to improve the PYs’ skills in exchanging views with other participants; and, (2-c) to enhance their abilities in presenting their own ideas in public, through a free-flowing and active exchange of opinions.
Meanwhile, the Post-Program Session intends to utilize the results of the Discussion Program and encourage the PYs’ active participation in social activities after the SSEAYP.
The Facilitators, who are well-informed and competent for facilitating discussions, shall be appointed to provide support for PYs in the Discussion Program. They should have ample knowledge and experience in the respective group themes and the ability to facilitate discussions. As such, they are expected to provide the PYs with guidance and advice to carry out the Discussion Program.

2. Theme
The Discussion Program and the Post-Program Session shall follow a "common theme" and under it are eight (8) "group themes". Each discussion group shall comprise of more or less the same number of PYs from different contingents.

(1) Common Theme
The common theme for the Discussion Program and the Post-Program Session in SSEAYP 2009 shall be:

"Youth Participation in Social Activities"

The youth, as young leaders, are expected to play an important role in the revitalization and prosperity of their societies. This Discussion Program/ Post-Program Session will provide an opportunity for the PYs to reflect on the importance of their participation in social activities by understanding the current situation in each country and discussing possible activities in various fields. Their active participation in social activities after the SSEAYP is highly encouraged.

(2) Group Themes
The group themes shall be set as follows (One Facilitator for each group theme):
1. Cross-cultural Understanding
2. Environment
3. Food Culture / Food and Nutrition Education
4. International Relations
5. School Education
6. Traditional Culture
7. Volunteer Activities
8. Youth Development

3. Roles of Discussion Facilitators

􀂾 Determine and propose the group objectives for approval of the Administration
􀂾 Draft the basic information and pre-program assignments for approval of the Administration
􀂾 Provide the respective governments and PYs directly with further information as necessary, with the consent of the Administration
􀂾 Coordinate and manage the assigned discussion group
􀂾 Facilitate the group discussions
􀂾 Give support and advice to group members in charge
􀂾 Consolidate and summarize the activity records taken
􀂾 Coordinate and manage the Introductory Program and the Presentation of Discussion Results

4. Qualification of the Facilitators

The basic qualifications of the Facilitators shall be:
Good command of English to facilitate discussion (reference level: TOEIC860, UN Association’s Test of English A, or equal ability)
Holds basic knowledge and experience in the field of the group theme in charge
Able to work from October 30 to November 25, 2009
Able to attend the Facilitators Meeting held in Tokyo from August 5 to 8, 2009
Approximately over 25 and under 40 years of age
It is preferable to have a good command of Japanese for a daily conversation, in case of those whose mother tongue is not Japanese.

5. Expenses

Following expenses will be provided to the respective Facilitators from the designated organization as entrusted by the Cabinet Office, the Government of Japan.
The round-trip economy class airfare from the respective capital to Tokyo, Japan to attend the Facilitators Meeting
Expenses for accommodations, meals and transportations required in the designated itinerary during the Facilitators Meeting
The economy class airfare from the respective capitals to Tokyo, Japan and from Singapore back to those capitals to attend the Discussion Program onboard
Meals and beverages to be served according to the designated schedule onboard the ship
Stipend during the Facilitators Meeting and the Discussion Program (subject to the rules on remuneration)
Medical and accident insurance for the entire period of participation in the program excluding the Facilitators Meeting (subject to the rules)

6. Schedule

August 5-8, 2009 Facilitators Meeting in Tokyo, Japan
(The objectives of each discussion group shall be finalized.)

By mid-September Facilitators prepare basic information and pre-program assignments to PYs regarding their respective discussion group themes.

October 30, 2009 Arrival in Tokyo, Japan

Oct. 31-Nov. 24, 2009 Discussion Program onboard and Port-of-Call Activities in Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore

November 25, 2009 Disembarkation in Singapore

The application for Brunei Darussalam Participating Youths to the 36th Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Programme (SSEAYP) 2009 is now open!

If you are single, aged between 18-30 and interested in joining the first SSEAYP to take place on a ship that isn't called the Nippon Maru this year, application forms can be obtained from Jabatan Belia & Sukan (JBS), Level 3 at the Kementerian Kebudayaan, Belia dan Sukan building during office hours.

The deadline for the submission of forms is 30th April 2009.

Only 2 airlines fly between Surabaya and Jogja ( Lion Air - (Booking on http://www.lionair.co.id) and Batavia Air - (Booking on http://www.batavia-air.co.id)). However, only Lion Air has same day connections with the Royal Brunei flights to and from Surabaya).

VIA SINGAPORE
BI flies between BWN-SIN twice a day daily (0800-1005 & 1800-2000) and returns SIN-BWN twice a day daily (1055-1305 & 2050-2305).

SQ flies between BWN-SIN every Mon, Wed, Thu, Fri & Sun (1220-1430) and returns SIN-BWN on the same days (0900-1120)

Silkair flies to Solo City every Tue & Thu (MI212 0755-0910) and Sat (MI216 1040-1155) and returns on Tue & Thu (MI213 0955-1300) and Sat (MI215 1235-1540).

As Singapore Airlines and Silkair belong to the same company, you might get cheap deals for flights flying to Solo City from Brunei by buying a single plane ticket from travel companies if you use both airlines.

Solo City is about 60km away from Yogyakarta and you would have to arrange your own transport from Solo City Airport to Yogyakarta if you wanted to take the Silkair option. As you can see using this option, you would have to stay in Singapore overnight and spend an extra night on the way there and then an extra night in Jogja before SIGA. You would also need to stay in Jogja an extra night after the SIGA finishes if you plan to return using Silkair.

The change of dates for the 21st SIGA in Jogja has now been confirmed by the 21st SIGA Organizing committee.

The dates for the 21st SIGA in Jogja is now Friday 1st May 2009 - Monday 4th May 2009.

The registration fee has also changed:

Early Bird Fee: USD180 if registration is made before March 15 2009

Regular Fee: USD225 from March 16 2009 onwards.

Child Fee (under 10 years old): USD135.

Please register early to get the early bird fee before the closing date to Fakhri or Hjh Roha.

Possible 21st SIGA date change

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the organisers for the 21st SIGA in Jogja are considering a date chang for this year's SIGA from the original date of 30th April to 3rd May to a new date of 1st May to 4th May. The organisers are currently asking for feedback from the other Alumni Associations regarding a possible change in the dates.

Therefore, if you haven't made any flight bookings yet, we suggest that you do not make any payments until we have received confirmation from the organisers. If you have already made bookings and paid for your tickets we would like to hear from you and email :

A decision will be made after 19th January. We will let everyone know once a decision has been made. In the meantime, keep checking the blog for any further updates.

Dear Participants :

We look forward to having you at the SIGA Jogja 2009, scheduled to be held from April 30th to the 3rd of May 2009. In preparation for your arrival, here are some logistical details that will make your stay a productive one. In that regard, please note the following:

1st BIMP-EAGA Youth Exchange Homestay Programme

Brunei Darussalam recently hosted the 1st BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area) Youth Exchange Programme. The Youth Exchange Programme was officiated on the 24th November 2008.

Fifteen male and 18 female participants from Sabah, Papua, South Sulawesi, Labuan and South Kalimantan, with Brunei Darussalam having the largest number of participants, were involved in the exchange programme.

As part of the Youth Exchange Programme, the Department of Youth and Sports as organisers, invited Bersatu to arrange a homestay programme for the youths.

The Homestay Matching Ceremony took place at the Pusat Belia (Youth Centre) in Bandar Seri Begawan on Friday 28th November. The youths stayed with host families for 3 days.

BIMP-EAGA was launched in 1994 as a cooperation initiative by Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, all of which are member-countries of the regional Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The objective behind the creation of BIMP-EAGA is to accelerate economic development in the four countries' “focus areas” which, although geographically distant from their national capitals, are in strategic proximity to each other, in one of the world’s most resource-rich regions.

It comprises the following focus areas: the entire sultanate of Brunei Darussalam; the provinces of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Irian Jaya in Indonesia; the states of Sabah and Sarawak, and the federal territory of Labuan in Malaysia; and the island of Mindanao and the province of Palawan in the Philippines.

The SSEAYP Country Programme in Brunei Darussalam for 2008 ended on Sunday 9th November. The PYs returned from their homestay programme around noon, an open ship for the host families which was then followed by a farewell ceremony for the ship. The Guest of Honour was the Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports, YM Dato Paduka Haji Jemat bin Ampal.

Homestay Matching SSEAYP 2008 - Brunei Darussalam

The Homestay Programme is one of the most important aspect of the SSEAYP. This year, Bersatu was given the opportunity to organise the Homestay Programme again. The Homestay Matching Ceremony was held at the Indoor Stadium at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas on the morning of Friday 7th November.

Terima kasih kerana memberi komen-komen di dalam c-box kami. Berikut adalah jawapan yang diberikan mengenai isu-isu yang telah dikemukakan di dalam c-box tersebut.

1. Persatuan Bersatu telah menghantar borang-borang keluarga angkat dengan menggunakan pos kepada semua keluarga angkat yang pernah berdaftar untuk program keluarga angkat kapal belia. Bagaimanapun, borang-borang ini hanya dikeluarkan beberapa minggu yang lalu oleh sebab-sebab yang tertentu, dan dipahami beberapa keluarga angkat tidak menerima borang-borang ini. Bagi keluarga angkat yang mempunyai email, Persatuan juga telah memberi peluang untuk membuat pendaftaran dengan menggunakan email. Di samping itu, urusetia program keluarga angkat juga telah berusaha untuk menghubungi keluarga angkat yang pernah berdaftar melalui telefon yang telah disediakan semasa program keluarga angkat yang lepas. Kebanyakkan keluarga angkat berjaya dihubungi dengan cara ini tetapi telah juga dilaporkan oleh urusetia bahawa ada sesetengah keluarga angkat yang tidak dapat dihubungi disebabkan nombor telefon yang sudah berubah ataupun tidak berjawab. Pihak Persatuan juga telah mempromosikan program keluarga angkat ini melalui media massa melalui siaran akhbar, surat khabar, siaran radio dan tv dan beberapa laman web untuk meminta keluarga angkat yang berminat untuk menghubungi pihak Persatuan.

Persatuan Bersatu amat menghargai sumbangan yang telah diberikan oleh semua keluarga angkat di dalam pengendalian program keluarga angkat bagi kapal belia dan juga program pertukaran (exchange program) yang lain dan berharap dapat terus berkerjasama dengan keluarga angkat untuk mengendalikan program-program yang akan datang.

Persatuan Bersatu juga mengalu-alukan sebarang cadangan dan komen untuk memperbaiki cara pengendalian program-program di masa akan datang (constructive criticism). Jikalau abiskita dapat memberi nama dan keterangan abiskita secara email ataupun bertulis kepada Biro Perhubungan Awam kami, prb.bersatu@gmail.com , Persatuan Bersatu bersedia untuk membuka siasatan mengenai perkara ini untuk memberi penerangan yang lebih mendalam dan lebih penuh dan seterusnya berusaha untuk memperbaiki sebarang kelemahan yang didapati.

2. Persatuan Bersatu telah membuka pendaftaran untuk mengikuti reunion on board pada awal bulan Oktober. Promosi mengenai reunion ini telah dikemukakan di dalam media massa melalui siaran akhbar, surat khabar, laman web, siaran tv dan juga siaran radio. Keutamaan kepada ex-PY memang telah disebut-sebutkan dari awal lagi. Bagaimanapun, disebabkan permintaan ramai, Persatuan telah membuat keputusan untuk membenarkan ex-PY untuk membawa seorang pasangan mereka sahaja. Peluang ini hanya dibuka setelah memberi peluang kepada ex-PY untuk mendaftar sampai 27hb Oktober di mana, jika ada kelebihan tiket, pendaftaran dibukakan kepada pasangan kepada ex-PY yang bukan PY. Tiket dijual secara "first come, first serve basis". Di samping itu, pihak Persatuan juga menetapkan 2hb November sebagai "deadline" untuk membuat pembayaran.

Setakat 27hb Oktober, hanya sejumlah 184 ex-PY telah mendaftar untuk mengikuti reunion. Tiket reunion yang disediakan oleh pihak Pentadbir kapal hanya sejumlah 300 tiket. Setelah dibukakan kepada tetamu yang bukan PY, pada hari Ahad 2hb November, pendaftaran bagi reunion on board telah mencecahi 300. Bagi makluman jua, bukan PY yang telah mendaftar hanya seramai 68 orang sahaja. Pihak Pentadbir Kapal (Admin Staff) hanya akan membenarkan naik mereka yang dapat menyerahkan tiket reunion tersebut ditangga masuk kapal.

Pihak Persatuan sangat-sangat berdukacita jikalau abiskita tidak berkesempatan untuk membeli tiket reunion pada tahun ini. Pihak Persatuan juga mengucapkan ribuan terima kasih terhadap sokongan yang diberikan.

Jikalau abiskita ada sebarang pertanyaan lagi, sila hadapkannya secara email kepada Biro Perhubungan kami: prb.bersatu@gmail.com dan kami akan cuba untuk memberi jawapan dengan secepat mungkin.

BPY2008 leave for SSEAYP!

After months of waiting and training, BPY2008 finally departed for the 35th SSEAYP on Monday 20th October. They took the flight to Singapore where they will change onto a flight to Tokyo Japan for the beginning of this year's SSEAYP. This year may be the last year that the Nippon Maru is used for this year's SSEAYP.

Present to send off the BPYs was the Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, YB Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Dewa Major General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Awg Hj Mohammad Hj Daud w(who was there to present the flag to the NL) and the Ambassador of Japan, His Excellency Mr Hashimoto Itsuo.

BPY2008 Dinner at Ambassador of Japan’s Residence

On the 17th October 2008, the Japanese Ambassador, His Excellency Mr Hashimoto Itsuo hosted the annual dinner for the year's Brunei PYs at the Japanese Ambassador's Residence in Kota Batu. YB Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Ahmad bin Haji Jumat he Minister of Culture Youth and Sports and the Dato Paduka Haji Jemat bin Ampal, the Permanent Secretary of Youth and Sports were also present.

Other invited guests included officials from the Department of Youth and Sports, Japanese Embassy officials as well as Bersatu Executive Committee Members, representatives from the Brunei-Japan Friendship Association and representatives of Host Family.

Every year during SSEAYP, Bersatu selects 2 representatives from the host families to be sent to Japan at the invitation of the Cabinet Office of Japan. This is done as a token of gratitude for their years of hosting PYs in their homes.

Also present at the briefing were members of the Executive Committee and Bureau Heads, the Host Family Representatives' spouses, as well as the YL and AYL for BPY2008.

Just to clarify a few things.....

1)Because this is a reunion for Ex-PYs, Ex-PYs will be given priority for registration.

2)The Committee has decided to set a deadline for 27th October 2008 for registration of ex-PYs for the reunion. After this date, ex-PYs may continue to register for the reunion until 2nd November 2008. Non-PYs (including husband/wife) may only be registered after 27th October 2008 in order to give opportunity for ex-PYs to register.

3) Each ex-PY may only be allowed to buy one ticket for a non-PY and may only do so after 27th October.

4) Only guests who are 12 years old and above may be permitted to attend the reunion.

Host Families for SSEAYP wanted!

The Nippon Maru will be in Muara Port in Brunei Darussalam from Thursday 6th November to Sunday 9th November 2008 as part of the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP). This may be the last year the Nippon Maru is used for the SSEAYP.

The Homestay Program of this year's SSEAYP will be held in Brunei from Friday 7th November to Sunday 9th November. The Homestay Matching Ceremony will take place from 10am -12pm at the Indoor Stadium on the 7th November and Host families are required to return the youths back to the Nippon Maru at Muara Port on Sunday 9th November before 12pm. There you will be given the opportunity to take a tour around the ship with your youths. The Farewell Ceremony will also take place at the Port and the ship is scheduled to leave Muara Port by 4pm.

Bersatu Association has been given the task to organise the Homestay Program this year.

If you are interested in hosting at least 2 youths (between age 18-30) as part of the Homestay Program this year, we would love to hear from you.

Becoming a host family includes inviting the youths to stay in your home for the three days and two nights as part of the "homestay". During that time, you will be the youths' "family" and will introduce to the youths to the Bruneian way of life. This is an excellent opportunity for you to learn about each other's cultures.

The briefing for this year's homestay program will take place at the Indoor Stadium on sunday 2nd November 2008 at 2.30pm.

Tahlil, Sungkai and Doa Selamat for BPY2008

Bersatu organised a Tahlil and Doa Selamat for BPY 2008 on Sunday 21st September at the Games Village. The Tahlil is usually around this time to remember those who have passed on, particularly to remember the events of 2001. The Doa Selamat was to pray for the safe journey of the new PYs. D' Other Office Cafe bistro and Ranoadidas.com organised a charity sale on Friday 21st September 2008, supported by BPYs (past and present). Proceeds from the sale will go to Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam.

The sale included Nasi Bryani kindly provided by D'Other Office Cafe and also various items generously donated by the public.

Bersatu to organise Homestay Program for SSEAYP 2008 in Brunei

Bersatu has been given the green light (verbally) from Department of Youth and Sports to start preparations for the homestay program in Brunei Darussalam for SSEAYP 2008.

To begin preparations, the Executive Committee has set up the Organising Committee for the Homestay Program.

The Secretariat for the Homestay Program will start operating from Wednesday 17th September at Bersatu Headquarters from 3.30 pm onwards. Members of the Organising Committee are invited to come during this time to discuss issues regarding the organisation of the program. Inshallah, we will "sungkai" at headsquarters as well. (We'll buy food from the gerai at the stadium and eat there :) ).

Anyone else who is interested in coming along will also be welcome.

Brunei PYs (past and present) to be involved in charity sale

BPY 07 will be collaborating with BPY 2008 (This is their social voluntary activity project similar to ours like what we did for SMARTER last year), De Other Office Cafe and Bistro (Official SSEAYP Cafe) and Ranoadidas, one of our sponsors from last year whom we are very grateful for !!

Basically, this charity project involves us having a garage sale for any old and unwanted items that we wish to sell. Proceeds of which will go to charity, namely PUSAT EHSAN AL-AMEERAH AL- HAJJAH MARYAM. This is a charity project aimed at raising funds for those less fortunate than ourselves in conjunction with the Holy Month of Ramadhan and also the upcoming Hari Raya Aidilfitri Celebrations.

To Mobilize the troops, those of us who have items we want to sell for charity are welcome to contact P.E, who has volunteered for this project ( We are most grateful :D)... The plan is to handover stuff we want to sell to him on the public holiday, Thursday 18th September 2008. i'm sure more details will be worked out shortly... please contact P.E should u have any queries.

Basically if u have any old clothes, toys, magazaines, etc that you wanna sell for charity- this is the time to do so and make a differenceAlso, this serves as part of our POST PROGRAMME project in line with last year's DISCUSSION PROGRAMME of the 34th SSEAYP 2007 by which the OBSC of this year can present on it :)The date is Friday 19th September 2008 from 11 AM to 6 PM!

Bersatu Tahlil, Sungkai and Doa Selamat for BPY2008

Bersatu would like to invite all ex-PYs and the new PYs to attend the Bersatu Tahlil, Sungkai and the Doa Selamat for BPY2008 on Sunday 21st September which will be held at the Games Village.

Those planning to attend should arrive at the Games Village by 5.15pm. Food will be provided but if anyone would like to bring a little something (sedekah), you're welcome to do so.

Everyone is welcome to come. If you can't make it for the tahlil, just come for the sungkai and the free food.

BPY08 Preview National Day!

BPY2008 previewed their National Day Performance at the Dewan DiGadong at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports on Saturday 30th August.

The Preview started out with a Speech by the YL, Ariffin, representing the NL who at the time had only just arrived at the airport after attending the NL meeting in Japan. In his speech, the YL thanked everyone who had helped them in their preparation for this year's SSEAYP.

The Preview included a fashion show and the Brunei Darussalam National Day Performance. Those who attended the Preview also had a chance to look at their Exhibition which will for the second year running, take place in Tokyo and not on the ship as in previous years.

Present at the Preview was Haji Metassim bin Haji Jibah, the Director of Youth and Sports; Haji Malik bin Haji Mohammad, the Chief Youth Officer; other officers and staff from the Youth and Sports Department as well as friends and families of the new PYs...

And of course ex-PYs from various batches also came to lend their support to the new PYs.

BNL08 attends National Leader's Meeting in Tokyo

Brunei Darussalam's National Leader for this year's SSEAYP recently attended the National Leader's Meeting in Tokyo, Japan. Miss Norhayati who is also the Deputy President II for Bersatu left Brunei for Tokyo on 25th August.

Among those who sent her off at the airport were her own PYs, executive committee members of Bersatu as well as representative from the Department of Youth and Sports.

Miss Norhayati returned on 30th August after attending the meeting.

SSEAYP 2008- Brunei National Leader, Representative of Host Families and OBSC

Bersatu would like to congratulate the newly selected National Leader for this year's Brunei Darussalam contingent for SSEAYP. She is Norhayati Haji Noordin. Ms Norhayati is the Deputy President II (National) of Bersatu and is a BPY from 1987.

She currently works for Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) and is also the Assistant Treasurer for the Brunei-Japan Friendship Association (BJFA).

One of her outstanding achievements in the SSEAYP world includes being awarded the SSEAYP International Award in 2007 at the 19th SIGA in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

As usual this year, Brunei's host families will also be represented at this year's SSEAYP. The purpose is to promote further understanding of the SSEAYP among the host families in each contry and to encourage the smooth operation of homestay program by inviting them to Japan as a token of gratitude for the years of hosting PYs in their homes. This year Brunei will be represented by Hajah Raimah binti Haji Awang Mohamad (L) of Kampong Mulaut and Hajah Rafiah binti Haji Akop (R) of Kampong Beribi.

Hajah Raimah and Hajah Rafiah have regularly hosted SSEAYP PYs from 1986 and 1989 respectively. The Host family representatives will fly with the BPY 2008 to Tokyo on the 21st October and will fly back to Brunei on 25th October.

And finally the Representative of the Alumni Association to the On Board Ship Conference (OBSC) for SI Brunei Darussalam : Md Nazriman bin Hj Awg Abd Rahman. Md Nazriman was elected to the Executive Committee of Bersatu last year and serves as the Deputy Treasurer for Session 2007-2009. He was a PY from batch 2005. Md Nazriman is a teacher at SMJA Secondary School in Bandar Seri Begawan and teaches Japanese as one of his subjects. The OBSC representative will join the PYs on the Nippon Maru at Manila Port on 4th December and will return to their respective countries from Tokyo on 13th December. The OBSC provides a venue for the alumni associations to share one another's post program projects, to discuss ongoing and prospective collaborative activities, to introduce SI to the current PYs and to prepare the publication of SSEAYP News (SI's newsletter).

Thanks to everyone who came to Pusat Belia on Monday 18th August to help out with the orientation of the new BPYs.

The evening started with a short introduction from Deputy President I of Bersatu, Ahanapi BPY88. The remainder of the evening included a presentation from Tasha and Chris of BPY07 to share tips and hints about the programme to the PYs.

Then everyone broke into different groups according to their committees to give advice to the new PYs.

Hopefully the new PYs got a good taste of our extended SSEAYP Family and of what's to come.

The day before, BPY06 and BPY07 prepared a little exhibition for the new PYs also at the Pusat Belia.

Hippo Lex Group visits Brunei

As with the previous years, the Hippo-Lex Family Group from Japan visited Brunei as part of their Borneo tour. They arrived on 24th July 2008 from Kota Kinabalu at Brunei International Airport after completing their homestay and visit to Tambunan in Sabah. This year a total of 15 participants joined the visit.

Bersatu with the kind co-operation and help of host families organised the homestay for the Family Group here in Brunei.

A welcoming/farewell party was held on the 25th of July at the Pusat Belia (Youth Centre) for the Group with the host families. BPY2007 were kind enough to perform at the party. (Some pictures on their website here )

The homestay ends on 27th July when they will check into Brunei Hotel in Bandar Seri Begawan and will fly back to Japan via KK the following day.
